The teaser that taught us

Seven video jobs, one useful failure, and the world seen from three metres

I wanted a five-second teaser from what we had, after seeing what a video model could do with six reference sheets. The first try animated an aerial still. It came back as a pan and zoom: waves shimmered, palms moved, and nobody did anything, because from ninety metres up a person is three pixels.

Dropping a camera to three metres on the beach changed everything, and it cost nothing. The world we had judged for eight phases from the air turned out to be cinematic at eye level: catamarans leading up the sand, fishermen at the boats, the village under its palms. Nobody had looked from here.

Then the useful failure. A generative edit painted one traveller into that plate, and repainted the whole frame doing it. One background fisherman came back the size of a child, two others with their hands melted. The video model was innocent; the still was the problem. The fix was to cut the traveller out and lay him on the untouched render.

The clip is fine and I am not happy with it. The fishermen sit like mannequins because they are mannequins: static meshes with no skeleton. A video model cannot supply people. That is what the world needs next, and it is why phase 09 changed shape. Seven generation jobs, all logged.

The beach at c.1700 from three metres, rendered straight from the world. No generation. The first time anyone had looked from here.

The same fishermen in the engine render, above, and after a generative edit added one figure, below. The edit repainted them: one shrunk, two with melted hands.

The honest version. The engine render untouched, one cut-out traveller composited onto the sand.
